Electronic Document Requirements

All PACFilings require the attachment of an electronic document that the submitter intends to file with the court. To ensure the court can access and read the documents that are submitted electronically, a series of document rules have been developed regarding document formatting and characteristics. The following provides a list of standards that all documents should meet before being associated to a PACFiling:

  • All documents must be saved in the PDF file format.

  • The document must be less than 500 MB (megabytes) in size.

  • Documents originally created using a word processing program should only use fonts that are recognized by the PACFile system. The list of acceptable fonts can be found in the PDF at the bottom of the page. If you don't use one of the accepted fonts, you must embed the chosen font in your PDF during the conversion process.

  • All text must be black and set on white pages.

  • If a scanner is going to be used to convert a hardcopy document into an electronic format, the DPI (dots per inch) on the scanner should be set at 300 for black and white and 200 for color.

  • The document name must not contain any of the following characters:

  • Documents that require a signature do not require one that is handwritten or “wet”. S-signatures, a common form of electronic signature, may be used. S-signatures are created by typing the symbol /s/ before the typed name of the signatory (ex. /s/ John Smith).

  • Documents for different filing types cannot be combined and submitted as a single electronic file. Each document must be attached to the distinct filing type that has been identified for submission.

  • If the filing contains exhibits that are too large to scan or they are in a format that cannot be converted into a PDF, these should be sent to the court using traditional delivery methods (ex. U.S. Mail, commercial carrier, in-person, etc.) within seven days of the submission of the electronic filing.

  • Documents submitted to the court should not be secured in any way. Use of password protection features will inhibit or prevent the processing of electronic files.
